Are you addicted to carbs? Check out this healthy bread to satisfy your carb cravings!
I get this question all the time from patients that are trying to lose weight and struggling with a low carb or no carb diet. Our society consumes an enormous amount of carbohydrates in our diets and bread can be a true weakness for some of us. If you are one of these people, then you should try Ezekiel bread.
Ezekiel bread gets its name from the Bible passage, Ezekiel 4:9 which states: “Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself.” The company that makes Ezekiel bread has taken this passage to heart and created their bread with the same ingredients.
Ezekiel bread is generally considered healthier due to how it’s made. This bread is made from sprouted grains as opposed to most breads which are made from unsprouted grains. Why does this matter? Unsprouted grains contain antinutrients that can cause digestive irritation. In addition, breads made from sprouted grains are better absorbed by your body. This leads to an increase in nutrient intake that includes proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
However, Ezekiel bread is not the Holy Grail of foods! Unfortunately, Ezekiel bread does contain gluten. So, for those of you with gluten allergies and celiac disease, Ezekiel bread would not be a healthy choice.
Lastly, Ezekiel bread can be quite dry when compared to other common white or wheat breads. For a quick and healthy snack, I recommend spreading cashew butting on a slice of Ezekiel bread. They also make a cinnamon raisin option that is good for breakfast.
I hope you carb cravers out there enjoy this new alternative. Leave a comment below with your favorite Ezekiel bread snacks.
