If you hit the gym hard four to five days a week, your muscles are bound to react to that consistent stress. While lifting heavy builds strength, it can also lead to serious tightness, restricted range of motion, and joints that just aren’t moving right.
Recently, we welcomed Jeff, a local fitness trainer and heavy lifter, back into Nashville Neck & Back. He’d been crushing it in the gym—even hitting a 405-lb squat PR on a knee replacement—but his upper back and traps were insanely tight, and he was dealing with some classic post-lifting lower back stiffness.
We captured his entire treatment on camera, from the intense soft tissue work to the deep spinal decompression.

Flipping the Switch on Tight Traps: Muscle Scraping
Before jumping straight into manual adjustments, we wanted to prime Jeff’s upper back. When you lift heavy consistently, the muscles around your neck and shoulders can become locked down.
We used muscle scraping (IASTM) on his traps to:
-
Increase vasodilation: Bringing a massive rush of fresh blood flow to the surface to promote localized healing.
-
Relax the tissue: Loosening up the hyper-toned muscles so they stop fighting against the skeleton.
-
Prep the spine: Making the upcoming skeletal adjustments much easier on his body.
You’ll notice in the video that his right side got significantly redder than his left with the exact same amount of pressure—a clear sign of where his body was holding the majority of that lifting tension!
Adapting the Care: Custom Full-Spine Adjustments
Chiropractic care isn’t one-size-fits-all. Because Jeff has a “bionic” replaced knee, his range of motion is naturally limited in certain positions, making a standard lumbar side-posture roll a bit tricky. To get his stiff lower back to release safely, we modified our positioning, utilizing a leg-assisted leverage technique that allowed his lumbar spine to release beautifully.
From there, we moved into:
-
The Mid-Back “Bear Hug”: A highly effective move for active gym-goers that opens up the thoracic spine much easier than face-down pressing.
-
Cervical Adjustments: Targeting the stiff lower segments of his neck to relieve the pressure that can sometimes cause numbness down the arms when lifting or doing cardio.
Finishing Strong with the Y-Strap Decompression
To wrap up Jeff’s session, we used the Y-Strap for long-axis cervical decompression. With his traps already thoroughly loosened up from the muscle scraping, his neck was perfectly prepped. The decompression gave him a deep release that he felt halfway down his spine, leaving him feeling “an inch taller” and completely reset.
Keep the Joints Loose, Let the Muscles Chill
As we told Jeff at the end of his session, if we can keep your joints moving properly, your overworked muscles will finally get the signal to chill out.
Whether you are a personal trainer, a competitive athlete, or someone who is just tired of carrying daily stress in your shoulders, your body deserves targeted maintenance.
